Doña Taide, the Elena Rodríguez family, and the Border Patrol Victims Network invite the SOA Watch community to participate in the 10th year anniversary vigil in commemoration of José Antonio Elena Rodríguez. 

**This is a cross-border mobilization, we acknowledge and understand there may be limitations to participation due to citizenship status and privilege. Please note, that there will be opportunities to participate on one or both sides of the border. We encourage all to participate in the ways they are able and feel called to do so. 

CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND:

On October 10th, 2012, 16-year-old José Antonio was killed by US Border Patrol while on the Mexican side of the border. Since then, José Antonio’s family has demanded justice, including organizing monthly vigils, larger protests, and other actions, including legal actions. His family is one of the founding families of the Border Patrol Victims Network. José Antonio’s mother, Araceli Rodríguez, and grandmother, Taide Elena have spoken at many SOA Watch Vigils and Border Encuentros. This year they are inviting the SOA Watch movement, artists, and activists to join them for a Vigil to commemorate the 10th anniversary of José Antonio’s murder. On October 8th and 9th we will reconvene at the border -  “on the line” - to stand in solidarity with their family and all victims of Border Patrol brutality.

Join us this October 8th and 9th in accompanying the Elena Rodríguez family and the Border Patrol Victims Network in Ambos Nogales (Arizona and Sonora) as we lift up the memory of José Antonio and countless victims of border militarization and anti-immigrant policies.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS:
Our programming will primarily take place outdoors. We will have access to patio areas at the hotel in Arizona and at La Escuelita in Sonora, and to indoor spaces if/when necessary for art making, storage, or any other logistical needs. As we come back together in person, we want to prioritize the safety of all our community members. All participants are encouraged to get tested before joining the Border Convening, to quarantine if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and to mask up while indoors. We highly encourage masking up while traveling through airports, ports of entry, and busy public spaces.

Let's make sure we are doing everything we can to safely come together as we stand in solidarity for justice and partake in joy with our community. We thank you in advance for your participation in creating a safe space for all of us to come together. 

WEATHER & PACKING TIPS:
October weather in Nogales is expected to be pleasant but do prepare for warm days and cool nights. 
We recommend packing a sun hat, a refillable water bottle, and warm clothing.
